Conversion Rate Optimization is essentially the process of analyzing the steps and experiences that lead towards a desired action and optimizing each component to get the highest percentage of completed actions.  The same way that in the physical world, we design a retail store’s look, feel, sound, and even smell to optimize the experience and then leverage sales staff to convert shoppers to buyers.  In the digital world, we are focused on the website.

  • Heatmaps – provide visualization of user behavior of hotspots based upon where users click, how far they scroll and what they interact with.
  • Session Recordings – provide actual recording of a user session, which it the clearest evidence of behavior.
  • A/B Testing – enables split testing to determine what works and what doesn’t at converting
  • Event Tracking – provides data on how visitors are engaging, making it possible to fine-tune SEO and PPC marketing campaigns to maximum effect.
  • Feedback – enables users to provide direct feedback while on site or during exit.

These are just a few of the overall tools.  For each, there is an established service provider such as Google Analytics for traffic data, Google Optimize for A/B testing, HotJar for Heatmaps, and so on.  Each type of data provides useful insights that can be used towards optimizing conversions, but data in isolation may not provide a sufficiently robust picture.  It is the collection and aggregation of various sources of data that will provide a full picture from which appropriate actions can be taken, including via A/B testing.
